Comforting Winter Cocktails to Warm Your Soul

Winter is upon us, and there’s nothing quite like curling up with a comforting drink to chase away the chill. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, these winter cocktails are sure to become your go-to favourites. 1. Classic Hot Toddy

The Hot Toddy is a timeless winter warmer that has been enjoyed for generations. It’s a simple yet effective remedy for the cold, combining hot water, lemon, honey, and your choice of whisky. The result is a soothing, aromatic drink that can also help ease a sore throat or cold symptoms.


  • 50ml whisky
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 1 slice lemon
  • 150ml hot water
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)


  1. Pour the whisky into a heatproof glass or mug.
  2. Add the honey and stir until it dissolves.
  3. Squeeze in the lemon juice and drop the slice into the glass.
  4. Top up with hot water and stir well.
  5. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, if desired. Enjoy!

2. Mulled Wine

A staple at Christmas markets and festive gatherings, mulled wine is a delightful blend of red wine, spices, and citrus. It’s the perfect drink to sip on while watching the snow fall or catching up with friends around the fireplace.


  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp brandy (optional)


  1. In a large saucepan, combine the red wine, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and sugar.
  2. Heat gently over low heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil.
  3. Once warmed through, remove from heat and add brandy if using.
  4. Strain into heatproof glasses and serve immediately.

3. Irish Coffee

For those who enjoy a bit of caffeine with their cocktail, Irish Coffee is the perfect blend of rich coffee, smooth Irish whisky, and sweetened cream. It’s a great way to end a meal or start a cosy evening indoors.


  • 50ml Irish whisky
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 120ml hot coffee
  • Freshly whipped cream


  1. Pour the Irish whisky into a warm glass or mug.
  2. Add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved.
  3. Pour in the hot coffee and mix well.
  4. Gently float the whipped cream on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon.
  5. Serve without stirring for the best experience.

4. Spiked Hot Chocolate

Hot chocolate is a winter favourite, but adding a splash of your preferred spirit takes it to a whole new level. Think rum, bourbon, or even peppermint schnapps for a festive twist.


  • 250ml milk
  • 50g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1-2 tbsp sugar (to taste)
  • 50ml of your chosen spirit
  • Whipped cream and chocolate shavings (for garnish)


  1. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until just steaming.
  2. Add the chopped chocolate and sugar, stirring until smooth and fully melted.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in your chosen spirit.
  4. Pour into a mug and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
